Filtering and Monitoring Software
Blocking and filtering software is typically installed on the computer. It screens the web sites that the computer user is trying to access. If a site violates the filter or blocking parameters the site will not be displayed. Typically they run from no cost to over $100.00. They need to be upgraded constantly as new web sites come out daily in attempt to thwart the software. Users can usually disable them and then restart them when they are done. Family Friendly Internet Service Providers are those that you use to access the Internet. These services block or filter unwanted Internet sites on their end. You have little control over what they filter. They are not easily defeated unless you are using cable or DSL to access the Internet, they you just bypass logging into their site and surf as you wish. They run from about ten to fifty dollars a month for access. Monitoring Software is software that you install on your computer that monitors all computer activity. It logs the activities in many forms. From screen captures to logging email, chat activity, websites visited, and all keystrokes it is by far the most comprehensive way to track the activities of those using the computer. It can be installed in such a manner so that the user will not know that it is running. I recommend that if you use this type of software that you tell those using the computer that it is being monitored. Privacy issues are of concern with this type of software. Monitoring programs run from ten to one hundred dollars. They too need to be updated but not as frequently and they can be hacked around and defeated by those with computer skills
